Carbon Fields
Monumental charcoal drawings and two-channel video, Serendipity Arts Festival, Goa
Serendipity Arts Festival, Panaji, Goa 15–23 December 2023
Carbon Fields brought together monumental charcoal drawings and a two-channel video. For the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa, Segard drew a single monumental forest directly at the scale of a wall — a dense, floor-to-ceiling charcoal thicket of trunks and undergrowth that surrounds the viewer rather than framing a view. Built entirely in black on paper, the drawing pushes his forest motif to an architectural scale, where the massing of marks reads as much as shadow and structure as it does as landscape. Seen up close, the surface breaks into the individual gestures that compose it; stepped back, it closes again into an unbroken wall of forest. Set against the drawings, the two-channel video carries the same forest into moving image and projected light. The work was made and shown on site, a temporary presence documented here in its full span and in detail.
