Falimente

Falimente draws a line between two closures: the winding-down of France’s heavy industry — the blast furnaces and steelworks of ArcelorMittal — and the quieter failure of Marseille’s small shops, their shutters pulled down for the last time. Painted storefronts — a crémerie, a tiled glacier, Lucienne’s barred door — hang beside collaged refinery skylines, so the corner shop and the plant read as one event at two scales: the same shutter falling on the épicerie and the furnace alike.

The title is borrowed from Giacomo Balla’s 1902 Fallimento, the Italian Futurist’s study of a bankrupt shop’s graffiti-scrawled door. Where Balla framed a single failure, Segard lets it multiply — shutter after shutter, until a whole economy reads as one long closing time.
