Fields and Tunnels
Charcoal drawings
2018 – ongoing
Fields and Tunnels is a suite of charcoal drawings that move from the scale of a page to that of a city. Dense, worked charcoal and pierre noire build underpasses, stairwells and the residual spaces between structures, each sheet a different reading of how the built environment presses on lived experience. The suite takes its name from its largest sheet, which stretches the enquiry across nearly three metres of paper. It began as a reading of Georges Perec’s Espèces d’espaces, the book on the spaces we inhabit.
